Coming Next Month: Sci-Fi Movie Freak (MY BOOK!) (Updated 9/14)

Update: Pre-order now available. See bottom of post.

That's right. Your faithful editor in chief has a book coming out next month, and guess what. It's about sci-fi cinema. Surprise!

SDCC Photo Journal: Miscellanea

We conclude the Sci-Fi Block SDCC photo journal with a smattering of miscellaneous sights from the convention. The Futurama stuff (from a variety of manufacturers, including Toynami, Kidrobot, and Funko) is probably the coolest, but the other stuff was nothing to scoff at either -- especially the Gill Man statue.

SDCC Photo Journal: People

Considering how many people there are to see in costume at San Diego Comic Con, I took a small number of people pictures this year, focusing only on those I found particularly amusing.

SDDC Photo Journal: Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant is known for their Star Wars toys, statues, busts, etc., and they had some great ones this year. The pictures here are few in comparison to Sideshow, mostly because a good portion of their stuff on display was not actually new, but the new stuff they did have was pretty awesome.

SDCC Photo Journal: Sideshow Collectibles

As we all know, one of the coolest things about Comic Con is the pure spectacle of the event. Though I only captured a smattering of the sights present at the event, they are pretty much all worth seeing. Also, since I took upwards of sixty or so pictures, we're going to break this down by category. First up: the stuff on display at the Sideshow Collectibles booth.

San Diego Comic Con Survival Guide 2011

It’s that time of the year again, when pop culture geeks from around the world make their pilgrimage to California for San Diego Comic Con. There’s no doubt that tons of fun will be had it this year’s convention, and there’s also no doubt that there’s much more than enough for attendees to do. If anything, that’s the biggest problem that Con-goers are likely to encounter: SDCC can quickly become overwhelming. That is, if you come unprepared. In order to assist all the devoted pop culture fans out there who plan to go to this year’s SDCC, here’s a survival guide based on my own experience. This should be able to see you through the convention relatively unscathed.

Interview: SFB Catches up with Star Wars Comic Writer Tom Taylor

Last year, Dark Horse Comics released one of the best Boba Fett stories ever told, in Star Wars: Blood Ties. Written by Tom Taylor (Star Wars: Invasion) and illustrated by Chris Scalf (Star Wars: Purge), Blood Ties was virtually a complete critical success. Now The Sci-Fi Block catches up with Taylor to discuss Blood Ties, Invasion, writing Boba Fett, and what might be in the future for the writer.

Top 10 Sci-fi Films of 2010

2009 was an amazing year for science fiction cinema, so there was a lot of reason to expect 2010 to be weak by comparison. However, the genre pulled through for the most part, and what we got was a rather impressive year. It's now time for our annual "Best Sci-fi Films of the Year" list.

Two important notes before we start. First, for TV episode/movies, any standalone episode over 45 minutes is eligible for the list. Also, because we were unable to catch them on the circuit this year, The People vs. George Lucas and Monsters will unfortunately have to be held over for next year's list.

Without further ado...
