Dark Horse A confident start to a new comic.
As much as I think Star Wars expanded universe titles should stick to intragalactic conflict, Star Wars Invasion/Rescues gets off to a good start in this issue. This is a story of a galactic invasion by the Yuuzhan Vong, which have appeared in numerous other comics and novels, and it begins after that race has conquered a few of the outer rim planets. Finn Galfridian, the Solo children (Jacen and Jaina), and Master Luke Skywalker have obtained a holocron meant for Finn, and he sets out to return to his conquered home planet to save his father, who is unknowingly friends with a human-disguised Yuuzhan Vong. This series is setting up to be an invasion story akin to Battlestar Galactica, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or (*shudders*) V. It so far seems to be taking some of the best elements from those types of stories and creating a new story that is not only about invasion but about responding to adverse situations.
It's too early to tell, but it seems that this theme of the enemy appearing to be a friend will take on a prominent role in the comic, as there are also several instances of friends looking like the enemy. We get an early interaction that would be inconsequential if it did not set the stage for the exploration of this idea, when two men get in a heated argument but end up forming a brief but intense kinship when the Yuuzhan Vong attack them. Similarly, there is a resistance group that has commandeered an enormous Yuuzhan Vong spacecraft and unavoidably appears as the enemy to their allies before they make it clear that they are friendly. It may seem that I'm looking too deeply into all of this, but with the same general idea appearing in at least three different forms in this first issue alone, it seems the writers have something specific in mind.
As always, it's good to see Luke imparting wisdom to his students, but overall, it seems like the focus in this comic is going to be on those students heading into battle before they are fully prepared to do so. Finn is a character who momentarily shuns his training because he feels it is necessary for him to try to save his father. The Solo children, who are more cool-headed than Finn, end up going along to watch out for him. Just as Luke's students are slightly overconfident like he was in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is portrayed much like Yoda, as the calm teacher who urges Finn not to leave but who ultimately allows him to choose his own way. It should be interesting to see if Finn meets a fate similar to Luke's when he contradicted the advice of his master.
This is definitely a comic to keep your eye on. There is action here, but this issue generally starts things off with reservation, as though it is confident enough in its overarching story not to feel a need to wow us right away. Especially when you're talking about a race coming from without to invade an entire galaxy, the temptation to try to go big-for-the-sake-of-big must have been strong. It is a good sign that this comic avoids such an approach.
