Learning to Love Star Trek, Part 28: "Booby Trap"

"Learning to Love Star Trek" is a weekly blog series by Sci-Fi Block Editor in Chief Robert Ring, begun January 1, 2010. In this series of blog posts, Robert is endeavoring to determine whether he can make a Star Trek fan out of himself through an exposure to a combination of episodes from Star Trek the Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation. First, an apology for my second late “LTLST” entry. Between traveling and then preparing for San Diego Comic Con, the hours have slipped away like Romulan ale through the teeth of a Ferengi. Hopefully this will be the last setback.
But on with the episode. In “Booby Trap,” while examining the devastation of a long-ago war between the Menthars and the Promellians, the Enterprise gets stuck in a century-old trap that drains a vessel’s energy and shoots it back as radiation. In order to escape, Geordi’s going to have to pull off some major engineering stunts. For help, he enters the holodeck and speaks with an approximation of Dr. Leah Brahms, who designed the ship’s warp drive.
This is another one of those episodes that I like more in concept than in execution, but I will say I enjoyed it slightly more than most of the other ones that fall into this trap. The focus here is on Geordi. It begins with him coming off a failed romantic date and bemoaning his inability to relate to women, despite his great capacity to understand something as complex as a warp drive. Once the booby trap conflict hits, we watch him while he runs around the holodeck talking with a fake Dr. Brahms and verbally running through every possible rerouting of energy he can imagine.
Interestingly, Geordi develops a romantic interest for the Brahms emulation during their big problem-solving adventure. It gets a little cheesy at times, especially with the “I’ll always be with you”-type line at the end, but the fact that he is falling in love with a (90.7% accurate) approximation is worth thinking about. Does it make sense to be in love with someone that, at the end of the day, is a computer program? What if that program can offer the same support, encouragement, and kindness as a human (along with even more consistency)? If our answer to this is No, then what does love come down to? That’s a question to which no one has been able to provide a sufficient answer. So, wouldn’t we then be stuck back at having to accept the possibility of such love? Fortunately, the episode does not provide any answers. It lets us decide for ourselves.

Less interesting but still providing plenty worth thinking about is Geordi’s inability to relate to and understand women at the beginning of the episode, contrasted with his coming to understand the Brahms approximation later. At the beginning, it seems that he’s oversimplifying women by trying to apply his engineering skills to come to an understanding of them, but he later comes to understand Brahms very well. I don’t know whether this was intentional, but the question we are left with is “How?” Guinan explains to him early on that he is trying to relate to women when he should just be himself and act naturally with them. He seems to be doing this while working on the Enterprise with Brahms, so that may be how he was able to form a relationship with her. However, the other possibility is that Geordi was able to understand her because she is actually a machine -- or the materialization of a machine. Her actions and mannerisms, at their most fundamental level, are nothing more than highly complex algorithms. So, in this case, it actually may have been his engineering skills that allowed him to connect with her. This question of how he was able to understand her so well is intriguing, but I wish we were given more of an idea of what exactly allowed him to do so. It is a vital element of the episode, and we are left not knowing how Geordi’s character developed. I would like to see how Geordi’s ability to communicate with and understand women progressed after this, if it did at all.
What doesn’t work so well is the bulk of the episode that follows Geordi as he says things like, “If we use multiple injector streams hitting more than one crystal facet, we can do it!” This just gets tedious. It’s fun watching him come to various realizations, but the dialogue means nothing. I wish the episode would have focused elsewhere -- like on Picard’s excitement and re-invigoration at going out into the field and investigating an old, defunct Promellian ship, a plot point that is given some weight but that is never returned to -- during these monologues of technical jargon. Either that or give Geordi something to say that we can understand. No wonder he doesn't do well with women.
Maybe the reason I find “Booby Trap” more enjoyable than other “Great idea, lacking execution” episodes is that the questions it brings up are even more interesting than usual. Can computers perfectly emulate an individual? If so, could we come to love a machine? What is love? Is it something we can ever understand? These are concepts that science fiction has been exploring more and more lately. TNG wasn’t the first to do it, but it was on these questions pretty early. Either way, it’s always welcome when a sci-fi work explores such things. It tells us something about who we are.

What else? Her published papers and her psychological profile. But here's where you have to be a long-time Trekkie. I think one of the main reasons for the holodeck's existence is a therapeutic tool. You see this in the first season episode "We'll Always Have Paris". Excuse the slight digression.
It seems that 22 years earlier, Picard had had a deep relationship with a girl named Jenice. In this episode, she turns up again, with her husband. At the first break in the action, Picard goes to the holodeck to sort out his feelings (which is unusual for him anyway). He calls up a depiction of a cafe in Paris, where he was supposed to meet her 22 years ago, but he chickened out at the last minute. The holodeck waiter tries to serve him, so (just to get rid of him I think) Picard briefly tells him (and us) why he is there. But no sooner does Picard sit down, but one of the cafe "customers" nearby conveniently turns out to have the same problem. She is waiting for a boy who promised to meet her, and it is obvious he isn't going to turn up. This gives Picard a chance to explain to her and to himself why HE didn't show up all those years ago.
So you see part of what the holodeck does is try to decide what you want of it. It probably saw subtle clues in the way Geordi phrased his request, that he wanted Leah to be a likeable person, so it gave him a likeable Leah Brahms.

Ahh. That's why I was confused -- because I thought the holodeck would have used her psychological profile, but then it wouldn't make sense that she was so different. However, if its main goal here was to facilitate Geordi's ability to solve the problem on the ship, it makes sense that it would have used a more therapeutic version of Brahms.

The thing that disappointed me is that the action of the booby trap itself wasn't well explained. I got the feeling we were missing something, and I really didn't see how a human could control the ship better than the computer. But it's still a pretty good episode.
