Beautiful, moving, and simple.
Metropolis, despite being a somewhat fringe (at least for U.S. audiences) 2001 film, is classic science fiction. With robots, mad scientists, and monumental scientific achievements, it combines a few staple sci-fi elements in a plot focused on friendship and love, creating a movie that is so naturally enjoyable that its few missteps can be easily looked over. Based on Osamu Tezuka's manga of the same title, Metropolis is director Rintaro's simple wish for widespread kindness and acceptance.
At the film’s core is a boy named Kenichi, who is the nephew and pseudo-sidekick of Shunsaku Ban, an investigator seeking out a man suspected of smuggling organs. The smuggler turns out to be a mad scientist and is building a robot so humanlike that it doesn’t realize it is a robot itself. The scientist has been commissioned to build this android, named Tima, for a Duke named Red. Tima’s purpose is to take control of a recently constructed scientific wonder called the Ziggurat, a structure with massive military capabilities. When Duke Red’s sort-of-adopted, jealous son, Rock, sabotages the scientist’s operation, the nearby Kenichi and Shunsaku become separated, and Kenichi meets Tima, who has just been activated and, in the wake of the sabotage, freed. Kenichi and Tima stick together and become friends in a plot that winds through the aforementioned threads while Rock seeks out Tima to kill her, the Duke seeks Tima to throne her upon the Ziggurat, and Shunsaku seeks Kenichi to save him from whatever threats he is facing.
The fundamental theme here is one of science fiction’s oldest: the consequences of reaching for absolute technological power. The Ziggurat is the embodiment of this theme. Duke Red cares only about controlling its power, and he will thus do anything to get it. However, as the theme goes in science fiction, such great sources of power are unwieldy for humans. Apparently understanding this to some extent, Duke Red tries to sidestep the problem by putting it under his control indirectly, through Tima. In the end, though, it is he who is attempting to wield the power, and an indirect command of such power proves to be no less disastrous.
The concept of sentient robots deserving to be real members of society, not just tools, is another major aspect of Metropolis. Rintaro manages to make the robots the most sympathetic inhabitants of Metropolis. They are the bottom dwellers of society, yet they are completely selfless, willing to do anything to help those in need. When Rock shoots one particularly friendly robot in the head execution-style, the fact that the robot looks like a walking trash can does nothing to combat the sadness of the act. The theme is taken a step further with Kenichi and Tima as they come to befriend each other, neither aware that the latter is a robot. The audience knows that she’s a robot, but their moments of childlike interaction are nonetheless the most moving parts of the film. Furthermore, the scenes of robots being shot or otherwise destroyed are more violent than the similar scenes involving humans, as wires and pistons hang from shot limbs like tendons and bone. You will feel as much sympathy for the inorganic characters in this movie as you will for the organic ones.
One element of the film that does not quite fit in with the others is Rock’s quest for Duke Red’s acceptance. Red makes it clear from the beginning that he does not consider Rock his son, so Rock attempts to demonstrate his love for the Duke indirectly, not by openly expressing his love (because he can’t) but by destroying anything his father opposes. His efforts include protecting Red against perceived threats, killing Tima so that Red will have no other child, and, finally, sacrificing himself so that robots cannot kill Red. Rock is a child clearly turning to violence out of rejection, but he does so to acquire love. Rock’s story is a moving subplot, but it does little to further the film's chief concerns. However, I personally am willing to forgive this for the sheer fact that it leads to what must be the best use of "I Can’t Stop Loving You" ever in a movie.
Visually, the movie is candy. It consists of a mixture of 2-D and 3-D animation (the third dimension usually applied to peripheral objects such as background machinery), and the characters are drawn in styles that reflect their qualities, the innocent ones looking more rounded and cartoonish and the evil ones appearing slightly sharper, more realistic, and more serious. The colors embellished on the environments are astounding and offer a level of simple beauty that fully compensates for the overly complex plot. A five-year-old could watch this movie, have no idea what is going on, and still enjoy it almost as much as anybody.
Metropolis combines science fiction themes both vintage and provocative, and it does so in a way that allows us better to connect with its characters, human and robot alike. Even when the movie is not quite working, its characters are always relatable, and the overarching ideas are always, to some degree, relevant. And when all else fails, you can lean back and just look at it and likely be content. This is the type of film that gets the fundamentals so right that you can't help but enjoy it.
