Come Hear Me Speak at GA Tech's Sci-Fi Symposium

This Thursday, November 17, I will be a guest speaker in a roundtable discussion at Georgia Tech's "The Shape of Things to Come" sci-fi symposium. The symposium is a free-to-attend, one-day event and is focused on the scholarly discussion of science fiction "across various media, as a cultural phenomenon, and as it relates to issues of scientific and technical development." I'll be partaking specifically in the symposium's "Science Fiction Across Media" panel at 3:00 along with Nettrice Gaskins, Michael Nitsche, Jay Telotte, Hank Whitson, and Lisa Yaszek (who have all produced some fantastic work).

Editor in Chief Robert Ring's 'Sci-Fi Movie Freak' Released TODAY!!!

Dear Sci-Fi Block readers,

It feels like it's been years since I began writing it, but in reality it has been just slightly more than one. Sci-Fi Movie Freak, my book about science fiction cinema (and my first ever book to publish), came out today, and I hope you will check it out.

Announcements about Digital Star Wars Stuff

There were two Star Wars-related announcements during Comic Con last week that aren't particularly huge but that are pretty cool nonetheless. The first of these was the release of what Lucasfilm is calling the Star Wars Blu-ray: Early Access app for the iPad (and, in August, other mobile devices). The Early Access app allows you to access select special features from the upcoming Star Wars Blu-ray sets, including concept art, interviews, and commentaries. The app itself is pretty slick-looking, too.

Venture Bros. Comic Con 2011 Update

Since the triumphant conclusion of The Venture Bros.’ fourth season half a year ago, Venture fans have had to once again cope with the sad (and wildly varying) lull that occurs between any two seasons of the show. For those fans who were fortunate enough to be able to attend San Diego Comic Con this year, however, there was just enough Team Venture in the goings on to stave off our hunger for a little while longer. Primarily this came, of course, through the Venture Bros. panel on Friday afternoon.

DC Comics to Go Day-and-Date with Digital

They were a tad slow to the party, but the move was inevitable. DC Comics has announced that they will begin releasing digital comics of all their titles day-and-date alongside their print counterparts. Apparently, this is going to begin around the end of the summer and lead into September before the new plan is fully implemented, but the point is they're doing it.

'Inception' Represents Science Fiction Well at This Year's Oscars

While 2010 was a solid year for science fiction, it wasn't by any means spectacular, and the year's Oscar nominations demonstrated as much. However, the critical genre hit of the year, Inception, did garner a whopping eleven nominations, showing that even at times when the genre is performing only so-so as a whole, it still has great works to offer.

So Amazon Streams Now; Is It Worth Paying For?

If you've visited Amazon.com's homepage today, you may have done what I did and ignored the big jpeg of a letter to customers. Those so rarely have anything important to say. However, after doing my morning browse of internet news, I discovered that this particular letter indeed does contain some interesting information. Amazon now offers streaming movies to members of Amazon Prime, the account upgrade that, for $75 a year, gives you free two-day shipping on most any order not fulfilled through a third-party retailer. Right now, the streaming offerings and quality are nothing special -- and are in fact a bit lacking -- but Amazon is clearly gearing up to compete more directly with Netflix.

Look at This: The Most Ridiculous Sci-fi Action Movie You Will Ever See

We've been slowing it down a little on the "Look at This" posts on SFB, but every once in a while something so hilarious comes up that it's impossible to ignore. If you thought that ridiculous Indian action movie showcased on The Soup demonstrated Bollywood filmmakers to be masters at creating absurd action sequences, this recent find by /Film proves that they are godlike.

'Inception' Is Almost the Only Sci-Fi Film Nominated for an Oscar This Year, but There's Good News ...

As you may know, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences recently released their list of nominees for the 2010 Oscars. As you also may know, or may have guessed, science fiction wasn't all that well represented this year. That's understandable. Though there were some really good films, it wasn't an overall stellar year for the genre, especially in comparison to movies like The Social Network, True Grit, and Black Swan.

Star Wars Blu-ray Gets Release Date, Prices, and 3 Sets

A quick update on the Star Wars Blu-ray set that was announced in August. According to a press release sent out by Fox today, all six Star Wars Blu-rays will be released September of this year.
