'District 9' Director Discusses Possible Sequel and 'Halo'

In a recent interview with The Sci-Fi Movie Page, Neill Blomkamp discusses the very real possibility of filming a sequel to his recent hit science fiction film District 9.

"I would totally make a sequel," he says. "I've got an inclination of an idea." He adds that the studio wants there to be a sequel, and he also hints at a successful de-transformation of the main character, Wikus. Blomkamp says that, to him, Wikus is the most interesting character of the film, particularly when he's fully human at the beginning. "I wanna see two hours of him being that character," the director says.

He also briefly discusses the possible future Halo film, which he was originally slated to direct but no longer has any connection to. He explains that he is no longer interested in making the movie. "If they came back and offered it to me," he says, "I would just say 'No.'"

So, things are looking pretty good for a District 9 sequel some time in the future. While it would be incredibly difficult for any movie to match the quality of District 9, let's hope Blomkamp doesn't fall into the common sequel trap of making a movie that fully relies on "what happens next" instead of creating another great experience in its own right. Judging from what we've seen, Blomkamp certainly appears to know what he's doing. Let's just hope he keeps up the good work.
