Cronenberg to Remake His Own Remake of 'The Fly'

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog reports that David Cronenberg, mad director of all things grotesque, is going to remake his own film The Fly, which is itself a remake of a 1958 film of the same title and concept.

The original version of The Fly and Cronenberg's 1986 remake of it are about a teleportation device inventor who accidentally teleports himself and a fly at the same time. When this happens, the two merge, and the scientist becomes a man-fly. While the original certainly has its merits, Cronenberg's remake is undoubtedly the better of the two and is generally considered one of the best sci-fi/horror films of all time.

So why does he want to remake it? That is unclear. THR suggests it may be due to the availability of better special effects technology, but that does not seem like a sufficient answer. Cronenberg doesn't seem like a director who would redo something just to make it more superficially slick, and his first remake's effects are still more than adequate on their own. Perhaps his reason for taking on a re-remake of the movie is simply that he sees another direction he can take the story or its thematic content. Whatever the reason, it somehow feels appropriate for Cronenberg to be the one to take on such a circular task.

We'll definitely be keeping an eye on this project (though, as THR points out, it will be a while before the film is made). Perhaps the director has a trick up his sleeve.
