Robot Boxing + Hugh Jackman = Potential Awesomeness

Sci Fi Wire reports that Shawn Levy will be directing a film based on a human boxer's attempted comeback in a sport overtaken by robots. That's right, in this movie, boxing consists of two robots fighting each other. Levy said that the film is "a father/son action drama set in the near future, surrounding the sport of robot boxing." What makes this even better is that Levy stated that Hugh Jackman (who played Wolverine in the X-Men films) is currently the top contender for the lead role.

Describing what the robots will be like, Levy said:

They are most definitely not Transformers, not Terminators, definitely not WALL-Es, either. ... Unlike a lot of these others, these are human-built, human-scale fighting machines. They are built for human spectacle. People in this movie have gotten bored with human carnage and human violence. So in the quest for more, more, more, this sport has evolved to this.

Sounds pretty awesome, but there is one catch. Levy, if you will remember, has been directing almost nothing but comedies this entire decade, his two most recently released films being the Night at the Smithsonian movies, which came after The Pink Panther and similar fare.

So, in light of the news of this robot boxing film, there are two things we need to hope for: (1) that this is not going to be heavily comedic and (2) that Levy's directorial chops are good enough to take on a solid sci-fi action drama.

The movie is due out in 2011.
