'Dark Void' Video Game to be Adapted to Film, Maybe Starring Brad Pitt

The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business blog reports that Capcom's upcoming video game Dark Void is going to be adapted to film. The movie is being developed by Reliance BIG Entertainment and Plan B. Furthermore, the companies, according to THR, are calling the film a "potential starring vehicle" for Brad Pitt.

The video game has yet to be released (it's currently slated to hit shelves January 10, 2010), but according to IGN, it is based on a soldier who has to fight off an alien invasion while equipped with a "Tesla-designed rocket pack." IGN sums the game up -- what they have seen of it, anyway -- as "one part The Rocketeer, one part Battlestar Galactica and set ... in the Bermuda Triangle."

Can't say that doesn't sound appealing. However, THR reminds us that game-to-film adaptations have historically had little success. To try to assuage moviegoers, a Capcom exec told THR, "As a game, Dark Void was developed with a wide-screen mentality -- a world full of adventure presented in cinematic scope and scale." Since video game companies could pretty much say that about any game, we're not willing to place any bets on it yet, but it is good to see that Capcom is at least aware of game-to-film history and is addressing the issue. Our next step will be to see if the game itself turns out to be any good.
