Will the 'District 9' Wannabe Deliver?

Not too long ago, a cool, five-minute giant robot invasion film (embedded below) called "Panic Attack!" popped up around the internet. As /Film notes, Film Junk is now reporting that the Uruguyan director of that short, Fede Alvarez, is speaking with none other than Sam Raimi to turn "Panic Attack!" into a feature-length film.

According to reports, Raimi's label, Ghost House, will be handling the business side of the film so that Alvarez can focus strictly on making his movie. Virtually all discussions of this possible feature adaptation of the short are focusing on Alvarez's professional path's similarity to that of Neill Blomkamp, whose short film "Alive in Joburg" was the seed that eventually became District 9. Blomkamp enjoyed the same professional assistance from Peter Jackson when making his film.

The question now is whether the movie will be any good. "Panic Attack!" features great special effects for such a small project but has little to offer beyond that. Raimi is certainly more than capable when it comes to getting awesome movies made, and there is obviously something about Alvarez's work that catches his attention, which is good. However, as opposed to "Alive in Joburg," all "Panic Attack!" has going for it is competent special effects work. Therefore, all we currently know about Alvarez's directorial skill is that he is good with such effects. So, while many will be hoping for a film on par with District 9, it's probably best to temper our expectations for now. At the same time, though, it's hard to see Raimi getting involved in something that doesn't have a good chance of turning out well. We'll keep a hopeful but realistic eye on this one.
