What the Heck Is 'Sucker Punch'?
It's safe to say that Sucker Punch had one of the coolest Comic Con trailers of any movie that might turn out to be science fiction (aided greatly by the use of "When the Levee Breaks" during its opening moments, a song that is exclusive to the trailer's Comic Con showing). It's also safe to say that it was wild and confusing. And yet, if you want to keep saying safe things, you could add that no one knows whether to expect the movie to be as good as the trailer is. This was a rollicking display of giant golemns, steampunk robots, future robots, distant planets, red dragons, crashing zeppelins, apocalyptic wastelands, World War I battles, and women flying planes, shooting guns, and fighting with samurai swords through it all. It was presented with blazing speed, disparate jump cuts, and, yes, awesome music. But we are left to wonder: What the heck is this movie?
Zack Snyder offered only the following three pieces of information: The main character girls are in an insane asylum. They enter these fantasy worlds together to escape the reality of the asylum. When they enter the fantasies, they do so by performing burlesque dances. Hunh?
One thing is certain: the worlds that the girls enter and fight bad guys in are definitely fantasy. There's no other way to explain the vast expanse between time periods and the inclusion of things like dragons. However, in the way these girls enter their dream worlds, the film might still be grounded in science fiction. Inception comes to mind, naturally, but this would be like Inception on an entire pot of acid-laced coffee.
Throughout the trailer, during the real-world scenes, there were occasional glimpses of some sort of voltmeter or similar device, which would also suggest a grounding in science for at least some aspects of the film. There were also brief shots of at least one of the characters being held down by doctors or nurses, perhaps being experimented on. So, it is reasonable to speculate that the movie could fall under the genre after all, despite its obvious fantasy elements.
The bottom line here is that we don't know precisely what kind of film Sucker Punch is going to be or even whether its genre will be clearly defined at all, but the movie looks like absolute madness. Will this be good madness? No way to tell so far. But the trailer really was pretty freakin' amazing. It's got that going for it at least.
You can watch the newly-released trailer for the film below. Know, however, that this is not the exact trailer shown at Comic Con. It is missing several things, including the opening Led Zeppelin music and the voltmeter shots. It also seems to be significantly shorter. But trust me: if you watch this, you'll get an accurate feel for what we saw in San Diego.
What do you think about Sucker Punch based on this trailer? Is it going to be a sci-fi film?
