Attack of the Roger Corman DVDs (and Blu-rays)
Wired was the first to catch the news that Shout! Factory will soon be releasing a slew of sci-fi (and horror) flicks from B-movie king Roger Corman. Shout! has acquired the rights to over fifty Corman films, many of which are either long out-of-print or have never been available on DVD or Blu-ray.
To complement the movies, Shout! claims to be planning "a wide range of bonus content for special editions and double features." The company is also working with New Horizons Pictures to remaster some of the better films.
Here is a list of some of Corman's sci-fi films to be released initially:
April
- Piranha (Special Edition DVD)
- Humanoids from the Deep
- Up from the Depths
- Demon of Paradise
May
- Piranha (Special Edition Blu-ray)
Later in 2010
- Death Race 2000
- Warlords of the 21st Century
- Deathsport
- Forbidden World
- Galaxy of Terror
Perhaps the most well-known of these movies is Death Race 2000 (1975, starring Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine), the classic racing film in which the violent sport of Death Racing has become a national pastime. Piranha may be of particular interest to modern viewers as well. Its sequel, Piranha II: The Spawning, was, by something of an accident, directed by James Cameron. However, Cameron's freedom in making the film was supposedly extremely limited by the executive producer, and he wasn't even allowed to oversee the editing. Piranha has recently been pseudo-remade as Piranha 3-D, which is due out maybe this August.
With the exception of Death Race 2000 the above movies are not currently available on any home video format, but most of them were available around 1999 and the early 2000s. Hopefully Shout! can do a better marketing job than the last guys so the B-movie goodness can keep flowing.
