Sci-fi Oscar Wins

Well, you've probably heard by now that Avatar did not win best picture, nor did James Cameron win best director at last night's Oscars. Those awards went to The Hurt Locker and director Kathryn Bigelow, and, frankly, that's a more deserving home for those particular statues this year.

Where did science fiction win? Considering the genre got 17 nominations across 11 categories, the end result was a bit low, but, overall, it was fair. The genre got 4 wins: 3 went to Avatar (Art Direction, Cinematography, and Visual Effects), and 1 went to Star Trek (Makeup).

Unfortunately, District 9, which we named the best sci-fi film of the year, got nothing. Honestly, though, it probably did not deserve to win in any of these specific categories.

Keep an eye on the site later for my full analysis of the awards from a sci-fi perspective. [Update: My full analysis has been posted. You can find it here.]

And congratulations to all the winners!

As normal, the sci-fi films

As normal, the sci-fi films received the technical awards, but no major ones. District 9 never even got a nod. Some of the nominees for Best Picture were titles I’d never heard of, and couldn’t name them today if my life depended on it. So, did the Academy’s decision to spread the category out to 10 really help those obscure films? I suppose it depends on how you look at it.
