'Battlestar Galactica' MMORPG Coming, but There's a Catch
G4's The Feed reports that NBC and Bigpoint (a video game developer) announced today that they are working on a Battlestar Galactica massively multiplayer online role-playing game, called Battlestar Galactica Online. Sounds good so far, right? Well, it's going to be browser-based.
According to The Feed:
Players will be able to choose to be Human or Cylons, and the game will be a blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay featuring 3D graphics directly in your browser. Assets from the television production will be integrated into the game to deliver an even more authentic experience.
It's difficult to imagine any browser-based MMORPG turning out well. It would seem to take a full install to create any RPG with enough depth and substance to be engaging. Even the commenters on The Feed's article pretty much unanimously express disappointment at the browser-based aspect of the game.
Browser-based games, being smaller than typical computer games, are also cheaper to develop. Perhaps NBC doesn't feel that the market of gaming BSG fans is large enough to invest a substantial amount of money in. I guess we'll just have to keep holding out for Star Wars: The Old Republic.

This sounds like vaporware.
In 2007 someone stated Vivendi was doing this after EB games listed it in their upcoming games raw file, Vivendi denied it and EB removed it, then April 1st a heap of sites talked about it, many linked images from the Xbox Live Arcade version of BSG which is a top down lame maze game / shooter of no value other than five seconds entertainment for too many MS points. The next reference is a few people posting stuff in 2008-2009 about the earlier April Fools Day joke, but none refer to anything that's showing real progress on this. Either way, if it's browser based and non-immersive I'm not interested, but it'll be interesting to see if this is legit.

Hi BaSH PROMPT,
That's an interesting history of the game. I didn't know about that. However, Syfy has confirmed the game's development through their own news site, Sci Fi Wire. In fact, they just posted the first trailer for the game a couple days ago: http://scifiwire.com/2010/06/bsg-online-trailer.php
