Ridley Scott's 'Alien' Prequel WILL be about the Space Jockey; Plus: New Aliens?

Back in October, it sounded like Ridley Scott's then-recently-announced prequel to Alien probably wouldn't be about the famous space jockey. Now it looks like our assumptions were wrong. In a recent interview with MTV, Scott said that the prequel, which is in its final draft stages, is about space jockeys, saying, "It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle."

Also, Scott has some new plans for the aliens themselves. "I have to design -- or redesign -- earlier versions of what these elements are that led to the thing you finally see in Alien," he said, "which is the thing that catapults out of the egg, the face-hugger." Sounds like he's talking about some sort of evolution. Will the prequel be taking a "the creatures were created as a military weapon" route? Perhaps, though there's really no telling at this point. Oh, and good news: H.R. Giger will probably be involved.

If anyone other than Ridley Scott was directing this movie, I'd be lashing out about all of this: how they shouldn't reveal the origins of the space jockey, how the mystery adds so much to the movie, how you can't improve upon the first film's alien design, blah, blah, blah. But, you know what? Ridley Scott knows what he's doing, and I'm just a guy who writes about movies. So, I'm going to sit back in my chair, move on with my day, and trust that everything is going to turn out alright. Who's with me?
