Dark Horse Explains Cancellation of 'Star Wars: Legacy' Comic

I had actually missed the original news, here, but Dark Horse recently announced that they are bringing their Star Wars: Legacy comic to a close after 50 issues (the series is currently on #48, with #50 set to hit comic shops in July). On their Facebook page, the company has now posted an explanation of their decision to end the comic, and they seem to have good reasons and intentions for doing so.
The following is an excerpt from Dark Horse's post:
Unlike other publishers, Dark Horse has never been one for prolonging a series simply to do so. Our comics come from a place of creativity and artistic expression, and this applies to all of our titles, whether creator owned or licensed property.
One of our promises to ourselves, our fans, and George Lucas himself was that we would treat our line of Star Wars books with the highest level of respect. We hope that you'll agree that we've achieved this goal, and trust you'll take our word when we say that we'll continue to strive for such high standards.
We are proud to say that the quality of Star Wars: Legacy has never dropped. John Ostrander and Jan Duursema have consistently created issue after issue of excellent art for nearly four years straight. Very few creators can claim such landmark success, and we hope John and Jan are as proud as we are of delivering such great material.
We have never felt that John and Jan's work dipped below the benchmark of fine sequential art. So, it was a hard, but ultimately necessary, decision to close this chapter of the Star Wars universe with issue #50.
At this time, we cannot announce what, if any, projects John and Jan will be a part of in the future. We hope fans will appreciate our proprietary stance in this matter. Know that we will make announcements regarding new Star Wars projects at the proper time, in coordination with our partners at Lucasfilm.
It's good to see that Dark Horse is apparently genuinely interested in bringing the title to a close when its artistic value has been fulfilled. This is a level of restraint you'll find few comic publishers demonstrate. In fact, comics might be more accessible to outsiders, and thus more successful overall, if more companies did the same. That way people could be more confident that a title is being printed because the writers have a good story to tell, not just because the hardcore fans will buy anything. I'm not saying that, say, Action Comics should be canceled, but it might be nice to see titles such as that one take a break every once in a while so that the publisher (and I'm picking on DC, but Marvel is at least as guilty of this as they are) could step back and think about what stories would be best to tell within them. Comic publishers generally seem more interested in getting their stuff out on schedule than in ensuring their comics' quality.
I'm going to say Dark Horse made the right decision here. At the very least, their move has raised my confidence in the quality of the stuff they put out. It's hard to put a price on that.
