DC Comics Reclaims Swamp Thing; Let's Hope They Remember He's Not a Superhero

Bleeding Cool has reported (in two parts, here and here – though I have no idea why they split the article down the middle) that executive editor Dan DiDio is pulling Swamp Thing away from Vertigo and back under the roof of DC. The apparent reason behind the move is to allow Swamp Thing to interact with characters of the DC universe. While this has happened before (see Saga of the Swamp Thing #24, 1984, for the first such incident), Vertigo and DC have recently been more prone to keep their characters within their respective universes. Also, sci-fi author China Miéville had been working on a new comic for the big grassy creature, but that project is being scrapped. Along with pulling the character over to his original publisher, a new creative team is going to be found, perhaps one that will be better prepared to integrate Swamp Thing into the DC universe rather than write a story for the character alone. Basically, Swamp Thing is being pushed into the in-crowd.
Though it could work, this is a risky move for the character. Swamp Thing has historically been used best as a primer for existentialist pondering and social commentary. Indeed, it is with such stories that Alan Moore was able to revamp the character so successfully in the ‘eighties. There have certainly been good Swamp Thing stories in which DC universe characters were present (such as in the Justice League's involvement in the aforementioned twenty-fourth issue), but if DC decides to use Swamp Thing himself as a crime fighter, it will likely be the title's demise. In setting the character up for frequent interaction with superheroes, DC is bringing him near dangerous territory.
If the company is dead-set, as they seem to be, on making Swamp Thing become involved with mainstream superheroes, such occasions will need to be rare, tangential, and on Swampy’s terms. If a masked character is brought in to help Swamp Thing in some manner that illuminates an aspect of the character, the payoff can be rewarding and meaningful. On the other hand, if the monster is pulled into, say, Metropolis to help catch criminals, the spectacle will be absurd.
It is difficult to speculate whether things will actually turn out this way. It would seem that DC should realize from the past that Swamp Thing is best left, for the most part, out of the affairs of superheroes. At the same time, though, this is a company that lives for inter-title crossovers. Plus, the fact that they are canning Miéville’s script almost certainly means that they have something particular in mind. That, coupled with the fact that the comics industry isn’t exactly known for reasonable decision-making, leaves reason for concern.

I agree with you completely about the DC/Vertigo debate. I've just never warmed up to the idea of Swamp Thing being put back into the mainstream universe, as it's very jarring to me every time he comes in contact with someone wearing Spandex and a cape.
