Superman has gone through a lot over the past several months, and now he’s setting out to reconnect with humanity on a more personal basis. To accomplish that, he’s walking across America. If something disastrous happens, he’ll fly off and take care of it, but then he picks back up where he left off. This is a great premise for a Superman arc, but it has to be executed just right. So far, writer J. Michael Straczynski is succeeding in doing that.
The conflict in this issue arises not from the threat of a supervillain, a monster, or a natural catastrophe but from Superman’s disappointment in himself for having lost touch with Earth. This is not explicitly discussed, but it is evident from Superman’s actions and demeanor throughout the issue (and it played a prominent role in the previous issue, part 1 of this arc). This is an austere Superman, answering some of his onlookers' questions and assisting individuals who need help of any sort. He is not only reconnecting with society. He is attempting to make up for his recent disconnect.
Naturally, walking across the country and helping people with mostly menial matters doesn’t come across as the most effective way to make the Earth a better place. That makes Superman’s reasoning and explanation for his actions the most compelling aspect of this comic. Occasionally speaking in near-Christ-like parables, Superman’s new philosophy avoids a utilitarian, “greater good” view of morality, instead focusing on the here and now. He lays this out in a way that may be enigmatic not because it is literally difficult to understand but because we are so accustomed to top-down moral philosophies: “Over there has to stand for itself, has to speak for itself. Because it's only when over there becomes here that we can stop this once and for all. And from now on, my eye will be right here.”
In Superman’s new understanding of the world, the greatest good is the immediate, smaller good because these smaller acts affect people personally. He is no longer keeping the largest number of people alive. He is planting roots of optimism and kindness. As he puts it so well, “In the end, all we can do is look at where we are, at where we're standing, and say we will not allow this, here.” This is one of the best Superman issues I have read in some time. If Straczynski can continue to explore this take on Superman and uphold the quality of this first issue, we may be looking at a classic arc.
