I suppose it’s not too far-fetched to imagine a United States crawling with robotic cameras that are meant only to guard against terroristic activity but that end up pervading every area of our lives. That is the basis of Eyeborgs, a film that sets up the above scenario and takes it to extremes, arming the robots with weapons and presenting a world in which they not only watch and record our actions but, in some cases, attack those who break the law. The problem with the film is that its creators try to let the political commentary carry the movie on its own, which leads to unevenness, as they occasionally lose hold of it stylistically. As a result, Eyeborgs is a straightforward political satire with occasional laughs and thrills but with no clear goal as an experience.
We are given no time period for when this film takes place, but it doesn’t seem far in the future. Police forces still exist, but the U.S. population is under constant surveillance by mobile, semi-autonomous, camera-equipped robots. Some of these robots are beginning to act according to a will other than that of the law, but since they control every surveillance system imaginable, they have gotten very good at covering their tracks ... and framing people. After a punk rock kid who happens to be the president’s nephew comes under attack by a freedom fighter, he finds himself caught up in some sort of conspiracy involving Eyeborgs gone rogue. Oh, and did you know that all Eyeborgs are armed with weapons? Neither did the government.
The political commentary is obvious: Eyeborgs is a criticism of laws that allow the government to peer into our lives. It’s only a guard against terrorism, they assure us. This is a sound setup for a sci-fi satire, but a problem lies in its execution. The filmmakers get trapped into believing that all they need along with their premise is a plot to put it in. Because of this, the story lacks consistency, rendering it unable to involve us emotionally in its events. At the beginning of the film, we watch a male and female character park in an alley and pull out an illegal substance -- "genuine, home-grown, North Carolina ... tobacco." After partaking in this vice, they begin making out. The guy passionately states, "Oh, you taste like an ash tray." Then an Eyeborg approaches the vehicle’s window and kills him, splattering blood all over the girl. At this, point, the movie seems like a comedic satire. But from here on, there are few comedic moments. Instead, the film enters political thriller mode for a while. It builds a mystery at the motives of the Eyeborgs and whoever is behind them as the robots carry out elaborate schemes and kill innocents for some unknown purpose.
Periodically throughout the story, though, and heavily during the final act, Eyeborgs becomes an action film, not using physical conflict as a way to test the characters but to showcase the Eyeborgs themselves and their technological terror. During these portions of the film, characterization comes second to robot stabbings and blazing guns, as seen when one character shoots a handgun in the most awkward, inexperienced manner, then moments later refers to it casually as a "nine mil." During these moments, the satire is lost and the action isn't good enough to warrant the otherwise empty screen time.
Because the movie has trouble finding its place in this way, it is unable to create a climax that builds on all that has come before it -- only part. It also becomes difficult to determine whether certain moments are meant to be comedic. When one character experiences a Soylent Green-like revelation at the end (which I won’t spoil), his line, "There is no __[REDACTED]__," makes perfect sense in the context of the story and is spoken in a straightforward manner, but it simultaneously sounds like a tongue-in-cheek parody of films that end in massive twists. The lacking consistency becomes confusing.
Eyeborgs could have been a solid thriller or comedy, but it ends up in indecision. There is relatable satire, there are cool scenes involving Eyeborgs dispatching humans in various ways, and some of it is funny, but the movie needed either another draft or some more editing. It’s difficult to connect with a film when the film itself doesn’t seem to know where it lies stylistically.
