Predators

Predators

No matter how good we are individually or as a whole, there is the capability for evil within all of us. At the same time that we deplore it, we are drawn to it. Whether this subconscious desire for violence stems from repression or from some core part of our being, we all seem to be subject to it. Most people restrain these desires well enough to function in society. Some, however, embrace it in full. Predators is an illustration of this evil. The film takes a handful of characters that live in constant pursuit of violence and forces them to confront the moral ugliness that they let control their lives.

Interview: 'Predators' Production Designer Steve Joyner Discusses His Approach to Designing the Franchise Reboot

When we first learned that there was a reboot to the Predator franchise in the works, I was hedging my bets. Sure, the mere thought of the Predator carries some degree of inherent excitement, but a mediocre sequel to the first Predator, followed by two aesthetically failed Alien vs. Predator installments had hardened me. The one string of hope I held onto after that announcement was the fact that Robert Rodriguez, though not assuming the director's chair, was heading the project as producer. Gradually, over the months following the original announcement, I began to be won over by the details about the film and finally by the trailer and concept art released at the South by Southwest film festival.

There are a number of things that drew me into full excitement over Predators, and one of them has been simply the look and feel of the trailers and sneak peeks we've been shown. None of the franchise's installments since the original film have taken such a natural, realistic approach to the setting in which the story takes place. Despite the fact that this reboot (which really seems to be more of a quasi-reboot than a full reset) takes place on a distant planet, the setting is that of a jungle. I'm sure there will be occasional alien flare, and this jungle is guaranteed to be inhabited by creatures that are anything but Earth-like, but overall, these events are taking place in a jungle like any other. Few as they may be, there merits to be found in the city settings we see in lesser installments like Predator 2 and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, but for the dark and bloody movie that Predators is aiming to be, it helps immensely to have something that is grittier but that is also familiar. With this setup, the film can introduce the characters to as harrowing a situation as possible without distracting viewers with alien surroundings.

One of Predators' production designers, Steve Joyner, recently took a few minutes off of helping Robert Rodriguez with Machete to talk with The Sci-Fi Block about Predators' production design. In our conversation, Joyner delves into his goals for the design of the film, the influence that the first movie has had on the look of this one, and the possibility of a Predators sequel.

The Guessing Game: How Will 'Predators' End?

I’m going to try something new here on SFB. This is something I’ve done from time to time myself ever since the series finale of The Sopranos -- examine an upcoming work from the perspective of a writer and within the context of similar and related works, applying everything we know about it, and try to determine how it will end (it should be noted that I failed horribly, as you can probably guess, when I tried this with The Sopranos). Because theoretically, unless the writers just go crazy nuts, it should be possible to figure these things out with some accuracy.

Let’s try it with Predators.

New 'Predators' Clip Released

We're just over a week away from the release of Predators. The studio has released plenty of trailers and sneak peeks, and now they're adding a straight-up clip from the film to the pile, via IGN. This doesn't appear to be an actual full, unbroken clip, but it still provides a good feel for the way the characters are thrown right into the mess in which they find themselves on the Predators' game hunting planet.

Look at This: International 'Predators' Trailer

Last September, I entered into the Predators news with cautious optimism. Everything sounded nice, but with all the disappointing Predator works that have popped up in recent time, I couldn't help but to hedge my bets. Ever since then, though, it's like the more I see and hear about this movie, the more excited I am.

New 'Predators' Featurette: Noland

A few months ago, I never would have thought that I'd actually be looking forward to a Predator franchise reboot. Today, 20th Century Fox released what seems to be their last Predators character profile. This one focuses on Noland, played by Laurence Fishburne. His character seems to be a bit more straightforward than the others, as he is mostly just a really tough guy, though he's also "completely crazy," in Robert Rodriguez's words. Not surprisingly, it appears as though he has a big role in the film, as the guy who helps everyone else survive.

'Predators' Sneak Peek: Cuchillo

We got another Predators sneak peek on Wednesday, this one focusing on the Mexican drug lord Cuchillo, played by Danny Trejo. Just like in the last character profile, in this one Robert Rodriguez refers to the Predators' planet as being the character's Hell. I sense a motif.

New 'Predators' Sneak Peek; Will This be a Redemption Story?

The Predators machine continues building hype. The Latino Review has another sneak peek for the film, this one focusing on the character Isabelle (embedded below). Robert Rodriguez gives us an brief bio of the sniper, but one detail about what drives her opens up a possibility for a theme of the film.

Second 'Predators' Featurette Released

The second featurette for Predators has now been released. This one focuses on some of the ideas behind the film from a production standpoint. Robert Rodriguez and director Nimrod Antal talk about the decision to cast Adrien Brody in the lead role, the balance of CGI and physical special effects, and the setting of the film on a distant planet.

'Predators' Profile: Royce

There's some new promo Predators footage over at Latino Review (it's unembeddable, so you'll have to check it out on their site).
